To a fleeing lion: a poem by Harold Alvarado Tenorio

TO A FLEEING LION
There you were,
as if you’d stepped out of a Kazan film,
leaning against a barbershop’s wall
your mouth swollen as you ate a sandwich
of the worst meat.
You came from another horror
where your father liquidated one
after promising,
in a macumba of glory,
the return that the other one sought.
The gal who walked out of hell with you
turned you into her sex slave by fucking you three times,
and servicing you nonstop for hours
in a small-town motel with the only dogs you’ve really loved.
And she headed south reaching Patagonia
where she found bliss between the legs of someone else.
Fate does exist and you’re already proving it.
Whoever has loved you will always write to adore you
whether you are an echo in the desert
or a trembling body wading
the river of the world where you’ll be happy.
Unfair and cruel: such is life.
But the lion remains,
ready to protect your steps.
