Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 7.09.36 AMHola:

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Adelaide Mestre. I’m a Cuban-American performer and the granddaughter of Abel Mestre, of CMQ, the radio and television network.

I’m writing at this time to invite you to my one-woman show, TOP DRAWER: Stories of Dysfunction and Redemption, that I will performing at Symphony Space this month, sponsored by the Cuban Cultural Center of New York.

It’s a show about my journey to Cuba to search out not only my roots, but a cherished piano that belonged to my deceased father and was left behind when my family fled in 1960.

It’s also a show about what happens when my exiled, gay Cuban father meets and marries my mother, a Park Avenue socialite. In story and song, with sentiment and humor, I recount my search for my father’s piano (which now resides in the Bulgarian embassy in Havana) and tell about my life growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, as a half Cuban/half WASP, in a colorful home filled with the music of my concert-pianist father and my opera-singing mother.

It was seeing my father’s homeland that inspired my telling of this autobiographical tale. After traveling to Cuba, I was compelled to write my story and the story of my family. It is especially meaningful to bring my show to the Cuban community. I would love to share it with you.
